Mid-Atlantic Lead Forum

April 26, 2019

Building on the National Lead Initiative and the December 2018 Federal Action Plan to Reduce Childhood Lead Exposure, the Region 3 Lead Initiative, which seeks to help communities in the region reduce their citizens’ exposure to lead.  A core element of this initiative is the Mid Atlantic Lead Forum, a two-day event to be held in fall 2019 and hosted by EPA with participation from partners at HUD and HHS. The Forum will gather state agencies, city officials, active citizen groups, and local healthcare advocates focused on discussing strategies for reducing blood lead levels in children.  The goals of the Forum are to:

  • Educate and inform invited cities regarding federal, state, and philanthropic authorities and assistance
  • Allow an exchange of information from city to city, and between federal/state/philanthropic organizations and cities
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer sessions between more established cities and cities with fewer resources or advancement in reducing childhood lead exposure
  • Dedicate time for each city to draft a framework for approaching lead-related challenges in their respective city
  • Engage community members as active participants in framework development
  • Lay the groundwork for identifying different points of contact to continue these discussions subsequent to the forum
  • Collect information and resources that will be compiled into a web portal or guide for the Mid-Atlantic region
